It’s Halloween Already?

UnicornCatsYikes

I have been neglecting this blog again. I doubt anyone besides my mom has noticed. Still, I figured it’s about time I get into the rhythm of things again.

I’ll be redesigning the website at some point, and there’s not much point in doing that without new content.

So what have I been up to? A lot.

Girl Scouting Ain’t What It Used to Be

A picture of the author with her fellow campers in the arts and crafts shed right after everyone painted their faces and legs.

I just learned today that the Girl Scout camps I went to as a child are being sold. Camp Tohikanee has been shut down for a while–so long that the grass is nearly a foot high by the dining hall. Camp Tweedale held its last flag ceremony this past weekend.

There were songs sung, games played, and adventures had in the night. There were fires, s’mores, banana boats, and a grill cheese sandwich fire that forced the counselors to order out for pizza. There were letters written, crafts made, and early morning icy-cold polar bear swims.

There were pranks. Oh boy were there pranks.

A Beach Mini-Adventure

BeachAdventure

There’s no point in freelancing unless you take advantage of some of the perks.

So when it was freezing, rainy, and miserable in Chapel Hill yesterday, I headed to Wilmington. Not only was it twenty degrees warmer in Wilmington, but my friend and teacher Matt White opened for Orlando Jones at TheatreNOW.

Adventures in Asian Karaoke

Korean-Karaoke

Given my love for all things Asian and my tendency to belt out Broadway tunes mid-conversation, you’d be surprised I have never done Asian-style karaoke. I always had a vague idea what was involved: A group of friends crooning away in a kitschy private room whilst consuming copious amounts of overpriced booze. But I never knew how truly epic it is–until this weekend.

Still Unpacking Asheville

photo 1

When I go on vacation, I tend to thoroughly clean my apartment before I leave. Because I know when I get home, vacation stuff will erupt from my suitcase and it will take me at least a week to get all the bits and pieces back to where they belong. As of this writing, my suitcase is still on the living room floor, reminding me there are some clean clothes in it I should consider wearing this week.

It has also reminded me there are many marvelous things about Asheville I have yet to convey on this blog. So here they are.

Oh Hi! I’m Bi

BisexualMy primary motivation in writing this post is to dispel all rumors once and for all that I’m a lesbian. There’s nothing wrong with lesbians. I’m just a teensy bit tired of folks assuming I am one because my dating history is a mish-mash of assorted hookups and month-long flings. I’m turned on by men AND women people.

My Fire Is Back Because of DSI

My fellow company members may have noticed that I haven’t posted anything about the Kickstarter we’re running for our move to Franklin Street. In these days of social-media blitzkrieg, I know that the volume of Twitter chatter on around your cause of choice can make a funding campaign.

But so can saying something profound.

I’ve held back so that I could mull things over a bit and get the words just right. Here’s what I’ve come up with:

Performing comedy is literally saving my life. No joke.

The Best Snowpacalypse Ever

Bruce VilanchSnow is to North Carolina what oil is to water. You’re just minding your own business when this sticky crap comes out of nowhere and smothers you. You freak out for a bit. Then you realize there’s nothing you can do except endure it. Plus, it’s a bitch to clean off.

Things were pretty chaotic this past week. Cars were abandoned by the dozen. Buses got stuck going up hills. People endured epic 4-6 hour commutes. Raleigh even joined Atlanta in the Southern-snow-freakout meme category when some poor soul’s car caught on fire.

Keep all that in mind when I say that this snowtastrophe couldn’t have turned out any better.

NCCAF-webLaughter is an under-appreciated medicine. Joining the DSI theater company has played a big role in helping restore my self-confidence. And now they’re throwing a ten-day comedy jam for the whole state!

Meagen Does Improv Comedy: What The Hey?

This is a picture of the white circular DSI logo painted on the black brick wall of the theater stage. If someone had been taking bets when I was in high school about what hobbies I would have in my adult life, I’m certain most folks would have put money down on writing. But no one would have cast even a single penny into the pot for improv comedy.

Yet here I am– a newly minted company member of the DSI Comedy Theater.
